CWC: City's six for Round of 16 - Al Ain broken into pieces

Reading Time: 3min | Mon. 23.06.25. | 09:54

Guardiola's men secured the knockout phase, beating the UAE side 6-0, while elsewhere, RB Salzburg and Al Hilal drew 0-0, leaving everything open in Group H

Al Ain probably regretted coming to the USA and participating in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. Four days after Juventus crushed them 5-0, Man City improved the Old Lady's work, dismantling the UAE side 6-0 and marking it as arguably the worst team in the tournament.

Pep Guardiola made a "crazy" move and - as if he was playing Pro Evolution Soccer or FIFA - changed the entire starting lineup, all 11 players (?!), but still gave no hope to the crew from Asia.

By the break, it was 3-0, as Ilkay Gundogan, Claudio Echeverri, and Erling Haaland from the spot paved the way for the Cityzens' triumph. In the second half, the Premier League side was quiet until the final 20 minutes when the popular Gundo completed a brace, Oscar Bobb netted his first goal in the tournament, and Rayan Cherki scored his maiden goal with the Manchester giant.

The UAE team noted only one shot on target and - as harsh as it may sound - is deservedly eliminated from the tournament. Alongside Al Ain, the Moroccan Wydad are knocked out of the CWC, though they left a somewhat better impression.

In the final round in Group G, the two eliminated teams will fight for honour, while City and Juventus will battle for the top of the table and to avoid Real Madrid in the Round of 16.

In the other match of the night, in Los Blancos' Group H, Red Bull Salzburg and Al Hilal drew 0-0, leaving everything open ahead of the final matchday, in which the Austrians will face the Madrid crew and the Saudi club will lock horns with the Mexican Pachuca.
