Dark days for Tottenham - empty stands after 45 minutes, Spurs one point above relegation

It’s been a long time since the North London club was this low — on a gloomy night, Igor Tudor’s side suffered a 3–1 defeat to Crystal Palace

The situation Tottenham Hotspur currently finds itself in was perhaps best illustrated from the end of the first half until the final whistle. Gloomy, disappointed faces were everywhere, and it felt as though everyone was simply waiting for the match to end.

In the end, it did — with yet another defeat for the North London side, leaving them just one point above the relegation zone. It’s been a long time since Tottenham were this close to the bottom.

Crystal Palace nearly struck immediately after kickoff. Just forty seconds into the match, Adam Wharton unleashed a volley from inside Tottenham’s crowded penalty area, but Guglielmo Vicario reacted brilliantly, producing a superb reflex save to keep the score level.

Tottenham’s first real attempt came in the 15th minute. Mathys Tel burst down the left flank and created space for a shot, but his effort lacked both power and precision, allowing Henderson to make a comfortable save.

The match exploded into life around the half-hour mark. In the 30th minute, Palace thought they had taken the lead when Ismaila Sarr finished after receiving a pass from Guessand on the right. The shot took a deflection off Pedro Porro and ended up in the net, but after a lengthy VAR check, the goal was ruled out for offside.

Tottenham responded just four minutes later. In the 34th minute, Archie Gray did brilliantly inside the box to deliver a cross to Solanke, who calmly finished from close range to give Spurs a 1–0 lead.

However, the game took a dramatic turn in the 38th minute. As Sarr broke through on goal, Micky van de Ven pulled him back as the last defender. The referee had no hesitation in showing a straight red card and awarding a penalty. Sarr stepped up himself and coolly converted, beating Vicario to make it 1–1.

Crystal Palace completed a stunning turnaround in stoppage time. In the 45+1st minute, Guessand won the ball before Wharton picked it up and slipped a pass through to Strand Larsen, who calmly finished through Vicario’s legs to give the visitors a 2–1 lead.

And Palace were not done yet. In the 45+7th minute, Wharton produced a beautiful pass to send Sarr through once again. With Vicario slow to react, Sarr took advantage and scored his second goal of the match, extending the lead to 3–1.

The chaotic first half ended with Tottenham down to ten men and trailing by two goals, while many frustrated home supporters had already begun leaving the stadium before the halftime whistle.

We did not see much in the second half — which was hardly surprising considering the situation on the pitch. The players of Oliver Glasner had no reason to take unnecessary risks, as Crystal Palace were already two goals ahead and had a numerical advantage. On the other hand, Tottenham Hotspur simply lacked the energy to pose a serious threat.

The first real chance of the half came in the 68th minute, and it fell to Tottenham. Dominic Solanke went on an impressive solo run down the left side and managed to create space for a shot, but Dean Henderson was well positioned and used his foot to block the attempt that was heading toward the near post.

In the third minute of stoppage time, Tel had an opportunity to score with a header, but the ball drifted wide of the Crystal Palace goal.

By that point, only the most persistent spectators remained inside the stadium, simply waiting for the final whistle to bring the match to an end.
