The negotiations didn't get very far and he will find another club at the end of the season
There will be major changes in Borussia Dortmund this June. Some of the team’s pillars are expected to leave, and one departure has already been confirmed. Julian Brandt will leave the Westfalen after seven seasons and will be free to choose his next destination. The news was confirmed to the German media by the club’s sporting director Lars Ricken following Dortmund’s win over Koln. Brandt is approaching his thirties but still has plenty to offer at his next club. When he arrived in 2019 from Bayer 04 Leverkusen, Dortmund paid 25 million euros for him, and his current market value is estimated at around 20 million.
This season Brandt has scored six goals and added three assists in 20 Bundesliga matches, while in nine Champions League appearances he has found the net three times. That is not considering excellent, considering his annual wage, which is around eight million euros, and with this kind of money, he is among Borussia’s highest earners.
"There have been a few reports already. The fact is, there were open discussions, and both sides agreed that the expiring contract would not be extended. He's played a few hundred games for Borussia Dortmund. I think we can only be grateful to him. He played for us for seven years. He was also viewed critically at times. I believe he'll be 30 in a few weeks – we can reassess things. So, this could be an opportunity for both sides. We ultimately reached an agreement. I believe we parted with a great deal of respect. But it's also another opportunity for both of us” said Ricken.
The midfielder, who has earned 48 caps for the Germany national football team, built a strong legacy at Signal Iduna Park, making 297 appearances, scoring 56 goals, and providing 69 assists. In the 2023/24 season he recorded a double-double in all competitions and provided assists in the round of 16, quarterfinals, and semifinals of the UEFA Champions League. Unfortunately for him, Dortmund lost the 2024 final to Real Madrid CF despite being the better side in the first half. With Dortmund trailing FC Bayern Munich by 11 points with nine rounds left in the Bundesliga, a league title looks unlikely. As a result, Brandt will leave Westfalen with just one major trophy — the DFB-Pokal he won with the club in 2021.
