Dortmund's 'Madrid wounds' are still bleeding

Not only did Borussia Dortmund get slapped in the face in the second half against Real Madrid on Tuesday, but that catastrophic 5-2 defeat seems to have had a long-term effect, as Nuri Sahin's crew once again blew up the lead and allowed the rival to come from behind. This time, Augsburg were fatal for BVB, beating them 2-1.

And everything started ideally for the away team when Donyell Malen broke the deadlock after only four minutes to Serhou Guirassy's assist - just like against Los Blancos. Even the possession of 82% in the initial 45 minutes was not enough for Dortmund as Alexis Claude-Maurice sent a precise long-range effort into Gregor Kobel's net in the 25th minute, setting the halftime score - 1-1.

According to many, Sahin's subs cost his team at least a point at Santiago Bernabeu, but the Turk did not hesitate to mix things up again, this time already at the break. He left Marcel Sabitzer and Waldemar Anton in the locker room, subbing in Pascal Gross and Emre Can.

Those changes made an impact only five minutes into the second half when Augsburg made a complete comeback! Once again, Claude-Maurice outsmarted Kobel, sending the rebound home for the Augsburg's lead and eventual victory. Borussia's futile pressure and 77% of possession proved ineffective, given that the BVB ultimately finished the game with fewer shots than the home team (12-11).

The solution for Dortmund's crisis is not on the horizon, as they currently sit in seventh place with only 13 points after eight rounds. The leaders, RB Leipzig, are now "miles away," and the seven-point difference - especially with Borussia's poor form - will be hard to reduce. Dortmund's dreams of the title are now probably shattered, only two months after the season started, and even the place in the European competitions could be jeopardized.
