Dr Geordie and Mr Tyne: Newcastle's home fortress is unbreakable, but away form haunts Howe

Reading Time: 2min | Sun. 23.11.25. | 20:27

Only Manchester City have more home wins in 2025, but the Magpies' away drought remains their biggest obstacle

Newcastle produced their most important performance of the season when it mattered most. Bruised by a pre-break defeat at Brentford and drifting dangerously toward the relegation zone, Eddie Howe and his staff crafted a game plan that finally cracked Manchester City in the Premier League.

And it worked.

A fierce St James' Park witnessed a 2-1 win on Saturday night that handed Howe his first-ever top-flight victory over Pep Guardiola at the 17th attempt.

"I've got lists and lists of things that haven't worked against them," Howe said. "What does work is a very small piece of paper, but you tweak, you learn, and this time it paid off."

Maybe it shouldn’t have been such a shock.

Only City (13) have won more Premier League home games in 2025 than Newcastle (11)! Since last season, the Magpies have an imposing home record against the league's elite - eight wins, two draws and only two defeats against City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham in all competitions.

But the contrast away from home is stark. Newcastle have not won a Premier League match on the road since April, a slump that dragged them to within a point of the drop zone heading into Saturday night.

"As much as I'd love to say the crowd shouldn’t make the difference, it changes everything," Howe admitted.

"We have to find a way to bring that same energy into our away performances. Whether it's system, personnel or something else - it's on us to figure out."
