Michael Carrick already has a headache after being beaten by a lower-league side in his first pre-season match

Manchester United began their pre-season campaign with a disappointing defeat, falling to a 1-0 loss against Wrexham in Helsinki, Finland. The match marked Michael Carrick’s first game in charge since being appointed the club’s permanent head coach this summer, following his impressive second stint as interim boss.

The only goal of the match arrived shortly before the break, with Sam Smith deciding the contest for Wrexham. The former Reading forward finished from close range after a clever move down the left, as Lewis O’Brien reached the byline before sending a dangerous low cross across the face of goal. United’s centre-back pairing of Ayden Heaven and Harry Maguire failed to react in time, allowing Smith to ghost in unmarked and beat Tom Heaton with a simple finish.

New £48 million signing Andrey Santos was handed his first start in a United shirt, lining up alongside fellow former Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount in the heart of Carrick’s 4-2-3-1 formation. However, the Brazilian struggled to make a significant impact during the opening 45 minutes.

The Red Devils were without several key figures, including captain Bruno Fernandes, who was given additional time off following his World Cup involvement. New arrival Youri Tielemans, who completed his £35 million move earlier this week, was also absent for the same reason.

Goalkeeper Karl Darlow missed the trip due to a minor operation on an undisclosed injury, while Benjamin Sesko remained sidelined after carrying a shin problem that cut short the end of his previous campaign.

United remain confident that both Darlow and Sesko will be available for the start of the new league season.

Carrick will have plenty to reflect on after an underwhelming display in both halves. A completely different XI featured after the interval, with a number of academy players from the U21 and U18 teams taking the field at Helsinki’s Olympic Stadium.

In the first half, the more experienced players who had not been involved at the World Cup were given opportunities, including Leny Yoro, Luke Shaw, Maguire and Mount. Players whose nations failed to qualify for the tournament, such as Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu, also featured from the start.

Despite finishing third in the Premier League under Carrick last season, United struggled to produce the attacking spark expected of them and rarely threatened Wrexham’s goal. However, with plenty of time remaining before the competitive campaign begins, the focus will now turn to building fitness and improving performances.

Their next pre-season test comes against Rosenborg in Trondheim, Norway.
