Emotional night for Carvajal, Lewandowski, Girona relegated

Mallorca and Oviedo were relegated too, while Celta will play in Europe again

Champions League in 2024, relegation in 2026. Girona have only themselves to blame for everything that happened to them this season. They had a golden opportunity in the final round, but failed to beat Elche. Girona spent most of the match chasing another goal after Arnau Martínez equalized in the 48th minute. In the end, the clubs relegated from La Liga are Oviedo, Girona, and Mallorca. The battle for the European places has also been settled. Celta repeated last season’s achievement by qualifying for the Europa League, while Getafe secured Spain’s Conference League spot. The team from the Madrid suburbs only needed a victory over Osasuna to get the job done.

Real Madrid ended a troubled La Liga campaign with a 4-2 win over Athletic Bilbao in Alvaro Arbeloa's last game at the helm, while champions Barcelona were defeated in Valencia 3-1. It was emotional in both games as Real’s Dani Carvajal and Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski played their last matches for those clubs. Dani Carvajal, playing his last game for Real Madrid, produced a sensational ball for Gonzalo Garcia to fire the second-place hosts ahead against Athletic.

When Carvajal was taken off with 10 minutes to go, both teams gave the 34-year-old a guard of honour as he bid an emotional goodbye to the Santiago Bernabeu after winning astonishing 27 trophies. Veteran Polish striker Robert Lewandowski scored for champions Barcelona in his final match for the club, but goals from Javi Guerra, Luis Rioja and Guido Rodriguez snatched a 3-1 victory for Valencia.
