The Manchester City and Brazil legend has decided to hang up his boots after countless trophies and successes
A true Manchester City legend has officially hung up his boots. Fernandinho — the midfield engine behind five Premier League title wins at the Etihad — confirmed in Brazil on Wednesday evening that his playing career has reached its end. The news surfaced during a charity match at Athletico Paranaense’s home ground, according to Globo Esporte, marking the close of an era for one of City’s most influential figures.

The 40-year-old hasn’t stepped onto the pitch since December 2024, when he appeared in Athletico’s relegation play-off against Atletico Mineiro. And when asked if there was any chance of one last comeback, Fernandinho didn’t hesitate: that door is firmly shut.
“I’m already tired. I ran for thirty-something minutes today and I’m exhausted. There’s nothing in football that motivates me anymore. I’ve achieved everything I could. Now it’s time to enjoy my family”, he said. Earlier this year, the Manchester City documentary “Life After Football” captured him reflecting on the uncertainty of retirement, admitting it gave him “chills”, even though he wasn’t ready then to make a final call.

He also addressed his departure from Athletico at the start of the year. With the club choosing not to extend his contract, Fernandinho described the split as amicable and expected, emphasizing mutual respect.
“We didn’t reach an agreement for a new contract, and that’s the most natural thing in the world. I’ve never hidden my gratitude, my respect and affection for Athletico, especially their fans”, he concluded.

Fernandinho leaves behind a monumental career. Before returning to Brazil, he lifted trophies with Shakhtar Donetsk and became a crucial part of Manchester City’s transformation under Pep Guardiola.
His list of achievements is immense: five Premier League crowns, six League Cups, an FA Cup, two Community Shields, six Ukrainian league titles, a UEFA Cup, and a Copa America.
