End of an era for Ochoa – Memo hangs up his boots

Legendary Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa has officially announced his retirement from professional football. The veteran shot-stopper shared the news in an emotional video and heartfelt message on social media, just a few weeks after Mexico's World Cup campaign came to an end with a defeat to England.

Ochoa played the final match of his career at Banorte Stadium against the Czech Republic. Before leaving the pitch, he bid farewell in a symbolic and emotional fashion by kissing both goalposts.

Following Mexico's World Cup elimination, the experienced goalkeeper was unable to hold back his tears, bringing the curtain down on a remarkable career that spanned more than two decades at both club and international level.

Reflecting on his retirement, Ochoa thanked his family, teammates and supporters who stood by him throughout his journey. He also spoke about the unique responsibility of being a goalkeeper and the immense pride he felt every time he represented his country.

"I never imagined how far a dream could take me. Being a goalkeeper means knowing you might spend 90 minutes waiting because everything could come down to a single moment. I carry with me the love of millions of people and the peace of knowing I gave everything for Mexico," Ochoa said.

The popular "Memo" added that his international career came full circle at the iconic Estadio Azteca, where it all began. In his farewell message, the long-time Mexico No. 1 also offered words of encouragement to the next generation of goalkeepers, reminding them that the position is not about perfection, but about pride.

Ochoa earned 154 caps for the Mexican national team during his illustrious career. At club level, he represented Club América, Ajaccio, Málaga, Standard Liège, Salernitana, Aves and AEL Limassol.
