Obiero will have his first competitive chance to impress McCarthy when Kenya face Lesotho on Thursday, 4 June at Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria, South Africa.
Newly called-up Harambee Stars striker Micah Obiero has outlined his targets with the national team ahead of a potential debut appearance.
Obiero, who features for English fifth-tier side Wealdstone FC, is among five players handed maiden call-ups by national team head coach Benni McCarthy.
The inclusion of several new players forms part of McCarthy’s broader strategy to test fresh talent, especially those based in Europe and of Kenyan origin, as he builds a competitive squad ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Speaking after linking up with his new teammates during Kenya’s training session, Obiero expressed his delight at earning a national team call-up.
“Always honoured. I was excited when I got the news. It was before my cup final, and I am happy to be here,” said Obiero.
The 25-year-old, who was prolific for Wealdstone with 14 goals in 44 appearances in the recently concluded season, outlined his targets with the national team.
“I had a good season where I scored a lot of goals, and hopefully I can bring the same form to the national team,” he stated.
The forward has hit the ground running and is eager to acclimatise well with his new teammates and become a mainstay in the national setup.
“I hope to put in good performances and help the country. I am also using this time to learn and integrate with my teammates,” said Obiero.
At the national team, Obiero will compete for a place alongside captain Michael Olunga, Austria-based Ryan Ogam, Lawrence Okoth, who plays for Finnish side SJK Akatemia, as well as Jonah Ayunga of St Mirren in Scotland.
