Akonnor will now shift his focus to preparations for next season as Gor Mahia return to continental football following their league triumph.
Fresh from leading Gor Mahia to a record-extending 22nd league title, head coach Charles Akonnor has addressed speculation surrounding his future and suggested he has little reason to walk away from a project that is beginning to take shape.
The Ghanaian tactician has attracted attention throughout the season, even before sealing the FKF Premier League crown. His name emerged among the candidates linked with the Ghana national team job earlier this year following the departure of Otto Addo, although the Black Stars ultimately turned to experienced Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz ahead of the World Cup.
Akonnor's stock has continued to rise since arriving at Gor Mahia in August 2025 on a two-year deal. In his first season, he guided K'Ogalo back to the top of Kenyan football after they surrendered the title to Kenya Police FC a year earlier, becoming the first African in decades coach to deliver a league title for the club.
With his profile growing, questions have naturally emerged about whether he could be tempted away. However, Akonnor says his preference is to continue the work he has started at Gor Mahia.
“There is still even chance today to leave, it is a fact, but we have built something. We have started something, and it would be necessary, very important to finish it,” Akonnor told NTV.
“For this level that we have taken these players, the fans and the kind of football they have seen, they would want a repetition of that. It would not make sense to go.”
At the same time, the former Ghana coach believes the interest in his services should be viewed as recognition of the work being done and a signal to the club's leadership.
“The rumours here and there will come but it means that our management should also wake up and try to improve the load, right?” he posed.
Akonnor will now shift his focus to preparations for next season as Gor Mahia return to continental football following their league triumph.
The record champions have secured a place in the first preliminary round of the CAF Champions League and will be aiming for a deeper run after missing out on continental action this season.
Gor Mahia are also expected to feature in the CECAFA Kagame Cup, the regional championship that brings together some of the top clubs from across the CECAFA region, providing valuable competitive preparation ahead of their continental campaign.
