England score all four goals in a 3-1 win over Scotland

Reading Time: 3min | Tue. 12.09.23. | 23:44

This was anything but a friendly match and Harry Maguire scored the only goal for Scotland

On paper, it was a friendly match between two great rivals. In reality, it was anything but a friendly. Packed Hampden Park booed the England national anthem 'God Save the Queen' so loud, that the tune was cut short. The spirit of late deceased Scotland coach Craig Brown – the last man to lead Scotland to a win over England (1999) could be felt when he was given respect by both sets of players, but still, nothing could prevent Scotland's defeat. Harry Maguire gave the hosts some hope with an own goal in the 68th minute, but Foden, Bellingham and Kane kept the winning streak with an easy 3-1 win. Tartan Army was prepared, the players wanted to give their best and keep the good factor, but their biggest rival was better. And Jude Bellingham continued his fantastic start of the season in Real with a great display in the national team as well with a goal and an assist.

Under Steve Clark, Scotland is good again, as tonight's hosts are unbeaten in their last nine official games (last defeat 11.06.2022 from Ireland 3-0), but tonight they were second best team. In fact, this is their second defeat in friendly matches, since they lost to Turkey 2-1 in November 2022. Even thou he said that he won't experiment against Scotland, England boss Gareth Southgate did just that, as he gave starts to Lewis Dunk, Kalvin Phillips, Phil Foden and Aaron Ramsdale. Off course, most eyebrows were risen due to Phillips' place in the team. Since playing his last game for Leeds in 2022, Kalvin Phillips has been named as a starter in as many games for England as he has for Manchester City (4) in all competitions. But Southgate cited the lack of options in midfield as the reason for starting the forgotten Citizen and he took his place alongside Rice in the center of the field.

From the first minute Scotland found themselves on the wrong foot and it was just a matter of when and not if England would score. 18th minute was the first opportunity but Foden missed a good chance. Walker was the next to miss before the visitors finally took the lead, but this time Foden found the net after Walker's assist in the 32nd minute. After a mistake in the penalty box, Scotland found themselves two goals down three minutes later, and Bellingham was the executor. Scotland finished the first half with under 40% of possession no shots towards Ramsdale. They couldn't do any worse in the second half so they started to attack and suddenly, they got 'help' from a substitute Harry Maguire, who gave the hosts hope with a clumsy own goal in the 68th minute. But Harry Kane was there to put the game away after a superb assist from Bellingham.
