Even though many forgot about the curly-haired centre-back, he last night became the second-oldest UCL scorer at the age of 38

Can you recall the 2017/2018 UEFA Champions League season? You would need some time, right? Let us make it easier for you.

Real Madrid won their 13th UCL/European Cup trophy, beating Liverpool 3-1 in the final, while Loris Karius and Gareth Bale made sure their names forever remain etched in history books - the former by his unbelievable blunder and the other by his stellar bicycle-kick goal.

Given that one can barely remember the trophy match, hardly anyone recalls the Group B clash between Chelsea and Roma at Stamford Bridge, which ended in a 3-3 draw, in which David Luiz broke the deadlock with a long-range banger in the 11th minute.

Since that night, October 18, 2017, the Brazilian finished his second spell with the Blues, played for Arsenal, returned to his homeland, where he won the 2022 Copa Libertadores with Flamengo and wore the Fortaleza jersey, and most recently (about four months ago) joined the Cypriot side Pafos, debutants in the Champions League.

Last night, the popular Light Brigade faced Monaco at home and salvaged a 2-2 draw, while Luiz once again broke the deadlock (this time in the 18th minute) with a powerful and skilfully-directed header, scoring a UCL goal after 2,961 days - or eight years, one month, and eight days, if you wish!

It feels like ages have gone by between that night at Stamford Bridge and last night in Cyprus, but both have something in common - David Luiz finding the net.

At the same time, at the age of 38 years and 218 days, the centre-back became the second-oldest scorer in the Champions League, behind only the Portuguese Pepe, who was a little over two years older when he netted for Porto against Shakhtar Donetsk in 2023.
