He hasn't even secured the World Cup participation, but Sweden FA doesn't care about that
When Graham Potter signed for Chelsea in September 2022, many fans were worried. The young English coach was currently in fourth place with Brighton, which was remarkable, but had no experience working in big clubs and under pressure. He was paid hefty (around 25 million euros in compensation) and got quite a long, five-year deal from the Blues. Those worries were soon confirmed. In April 2023 he was already gone, after spending 323 million pounds in the January transfer window, but recording only 12 wins, 11 losses, and 8 draws in 31 games. His downfall continued in West Ham until he came back to Sweden where his managerial career took off. But that’s not the end. The Sweden FA just rewarded Potter with a long-term contract after only two games in charge, none of which is a win!

After taking over West Ham, Potter was soon sacked again, as he posted the one of the lowest win ratio in the history of the Premier League (25 matches: 6 wins, 5 draws, and 14 losses). But the Sweden national football team had no worries and appointed Potter just a month later (October 2025) on a short term contract with one goal – to qualify for the World Cup. Potter was in charge for only two games: a heavy 4-1 loss to Switzerland, and a 1-1 draw with Slovenia. Sweden’s World Cup status is still in doubt, as they are yet to play Ukraine in their first play-off match for the World Cup, but Potter has been handed a new lengthy contract (until 2023) even without a secured place to the FIFA’s biggest tournament!
“It is an incredibly proud day for me, a very happy day. It's a fantastic opportunity to do something really important. It doesn't change anything in the short-term, because we want to win two matches to go to the World Cup. After that, it's nice to have the opportunity to work with everybody in Swedish football to create something really special” said Potter. He is happy, wouldn't you be if you are in his place?
