After months of consultation, Vihiga United was born, recruiting players from all five sub-counties: Emuhaya, Hamisi, Luanda, Sabatia and Vihiga.
The vision was bold: rise to the Kenya Premier League (KPL) and eventually conquer Africa.
With strong financial backing from the Vihiga County Government at the time, the club steadily climbed the ranks and finally earned promotion to the KPL in 2018, rising alongside Wazito FC.
However, that dream now hangs by a thread.
Mozzart Sport can exclusively report that Vihiga United, currently competing in the second-tier National Super League (NSL), is facing a bleak and uncertain future, with the club’s leadership stretched to breaking point.
Sources indicate that chairman Indumuli is torn between continuing to shoulder the heavy financial burden or letting the club collapse altogether.
Multiple insiders reveal that members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) have gone completely AWOL, abandoning their responsibilities and leaving the educationist to run the club alone.
Despite personally funding the club after county sponsorship was withdrawn, he is said to have reached a tipping point.
“All NEC members are nowhere to be seen. They do not even pick calls when club issues arise. The demands are piling up and the club is at serious risk,” a source close to the situation told Mozzart Sport.
The crisis has reportedly worsened as Indumuli prepares to vie for the Vihiga County governorship in 2027, a move that now stretches his finances even further.
“The chairman is running for governor next year. He has to fund the team, training, rent, medical needs, and still raise campaign money. That is where the situation becomes even tougher,” added another impeccable source.
When reached for comment, the former Kenya Secondary Schools Principals’ Association chair confirmed that without urgent rescue, he may be forced to make a painful decision.
He revealed that the team has been assembling only on match days, without training sessions, because they cannot afford player transport and other logistics required to organise regular training.
“If I had invested the millions I have put into this club elsewhere, I would be a very rich man today,” he said. “I have invested so much, but I have nothing to show for it except more strain. I think… enough is enough.”
