He was shown a red card in Paraguay's 1-0 victory over Turkey

Miguel Almiron has become the first player to receive a World Cup suspension under football's controversial new law against covering the mouth during confrontations.

FIFA confirmed on Tuesday that the Paraguay star will serve a one-match ban following his red card in the 1-0 victory over Turkey, ruling him out of next week's decisive Group D clash with Australia.

The punishment could hardly come at a worse time for Paraguay. Gustavo Alfaro's side enter the final round of group matches level on points with Australia, but trailing on goal difference. With a place in the knockout rounds at stake, they will now have to manage without one of their most experienced players.

The good news for Paraguay is that FIFA opted against imposing any additional sanctions. As with all World Cup red cards, the dismissal automatically triggered a one-match suspension, meaning Almiron would be eligible to return should his country advance to the Round of 32.

FIFA cited a breach of Article 14.1.b of its disciplinary code, relating to unsporting behaviour towards an opponent, while also confirming that the decision is final and cannot be appealed.

Almiron's dismissal against Turkey instantly became one of the talking points of the tournament. With Paraguay leading 1-0 shortly before half-time, the former Newcastle United winger was involved in a confrontation with Turkey defender Mert Muldur after play had been stopped for a foul.

As Almiron spoke to his opponent while covering his mouth with his hand, Muldur immediately alerted nearby officials. Following a VAR review, referee Ivan Barton produced a red card, making Almiron the first player in football history to be sent off under the newly introduced regulation.
