Gor Mahia are on a prolonged title drought going by standards set in the last decade.

Harun Shakava was the last Gor Mahia captain to lift the coveted Kenyan Premier League trophy. His successor Philemon Otieno has only hoisted the Madaraka Day Cup, an exhibition duel against arch rivals AFC Leopards that was part of this year's celebrations to mark the day Kenya gained internal self rule on June 1.

With fixtures for the much awaited Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League 2022-23 season out, Mbish, as Philemon is fondly known, is eager to guide K'Ogalo to their first domestic title since 2019. "Almost all the past Gor Mahia captains won the league title, I don't to be an exception. I want us to win back the title this season and return to continental football," Mbish told Mozzart Sport after their Saturday morning training at Camp Toyoyo, Nairobi.

"The organization around the team is good and all our programs are running smoothly with the issue of finances sorted. I believe the onus is now on us players to deliver," the former Ushuru FC midfielder added.

Tusker FC have won the last two league titles, however, their last victory in the 2021-22 season was voided by the FKF National Executive Committee and will not count.

Gor Mahia begin their quest for glory at home against Nzoia Sugar FC on Saturday, November 19 at Nyayo Stadium, before traveling to Thika to meet Bidco United. The 19-time champions will then return to Nairobi to face newly acquired Wazito FC to wrap up their first three openers.

The coach Johnathan McKinstry's side has lined up a high-profile friendly against fellow KPL club Nairobi City Stars at the Nyayo Stadium on Sunday as they wrap up the long preseason. In their last warm-up, Gor Mahia went down 1-0 to National Super League outfit Muhoroni Youth in Muhoroni.
