This fixture was originally scheduled for last Sunday at the Gusii Stadium. However, it had to be postponed after APS Bomet contested the decision to shift their home matches to Gusii.
With that dispute now settled, the two teams will finally meet in an early-season relegation six-pointer.
Both teams are in a precarious position and are desperate for points. APS Bomet are bottom of the table with five points from seven matches.
Ulinzi Stars, having played one more match, sit just above them with six points. Both clubs have managed only a single win this season, which underlines the significance of Wednesday’s encounter in their efforts to move out of the red zone.
In their seven matches so far this campaign, APS Bomet have collected one win, two draws and four losses, which is the joint-highest number of defeats in the league.
Ulinzi Stars have also struggled. They have played eight games, winning one, drawing three and losing four, the same number of losses as their opponents.
APS Bomet will hope that the Kericho Green Stadium offers some level of home comfort. Although it is not their preferred Bomet base, Kericho is the next county, and they are expected to enjoy support from fans in the region.
Local supporters have been starved of top-flight football since Zoo FC were relegated from the Premier League four years ago.
Ulinzi Stars are dealing with a particularly challenging situation. Head coach Stephen Ochola has had to cope with the loss of five key players who are currently at the recruits' training school in Eldoret for military instruction.
The missing players are Felix Otieno, Leonlevitt Otieno, Joseph Omuse, Frederick Oduor and Joseph Ochieng.
Their absence has hit the club hardest in defence, which may force the team to rely on a makeshift backline until the mid-season transfer window. Ochola, who recently halted Gor Mahia’s impressive winning streak by forcing a draw, is still searching for his first win of the season since his return, and will hope to overcome the Bomet-based side.
APS Bomet are also preparing to release more than ten players for police training. However, those players are still available for Wednesday’s match, which on paper gives APS a slight advantage over an Ulinzi Stars squad that is significantly depleted.
This meeting is also the first-ever competitive encounter between the two teams in the top-flight, with the kickoff set at 1 PM.
