It’s still early days, but the series is sure to attract a lot of attention

Manchester United have entered a landmark deal with North American entertainment powerhouse Lionsgate to create a dramatized series exploring the club’s rich and turbulent history. The project is reportedly being developed in a style reminiscent of Netflix’s acclaimed royal drama The Crown, with United set to receive a guaranteed low multi-million-pound sum if the series is picked up by a major streaming platform.

This move marks a bold step for the Premier League giants into high-end scripted television. Lionsgate, the studio behind blockbuster franchises like The Hunger Games, John Wick, and Twilight, will collaborate with the club to bring the story to life. Unlike the observational football documentaries that have become commonplace, this series aims to dramatize United’s history, focusing on the personal, political, and behind-the-scenes dramas that have shaped the club over the decades, The Athletic reports.

Financially, the deal secures a guaranteed payout for United should the series be successfully sold to a broadcaster or streamer, while also establishing a framework for ongoing royalties. The ultimate value could grow depending on the number of seasons, episodes, and the scale of the distribution arrangement.

Though still in development, the project has already attracted notable creative talent. Jed Mercurio, the acclaimed British television writer behind hits such as Bodyguard and Line of Duty, has been linked to the series. A lifelong Manchester United supporter, Mercurio’s involvement could help ensure that the story remains authentic to the spirit of the club.

Lionsgate brings significant experience in sports storytelling, having produced films such as the MMA drama Warrior (2011) and the NFL-focused Draft Day (2014). They are also developing a project based on the gambling scandal involving baseball star Shohei Ohtani’s interpreter, demonstrating a clear appetite for contemporary sports narratives with dramatic weight.

While it is not yet clear which chapters of United’s history the series will highlight, the club’s eventful past provides a treasure trove of storylines that could captivate both die-hard fans and a wider audience.
