Asked about scoring again against Gor Mahia, the versatile attacker said it did not feel unusual, noting that he has scored against K’Ogalo several times before, including last season for Nairobi City Stars at Dandora Stadium.
“Playing against Gor Mahia is always one of my favourite fixtures. This is not the first time I have scored against them. I was simply doing my job as an attacker. We thank God for this win,” he said.
The league debutants sit 17th with eight points from nine matches but remain within touching distance of safety, just three points behind Mathare United, who occupy the final safe spot after matchday 10.
Bomet have endured a torrid start in their maiden Premier League campaign, losing five of their opening nine fixtures. Their two wins, against Kariobangi Sharks and Gor Mahia, have both come away from home as they continue to chase a first victory in front of their fans.
On Tuesday, they stunned record champions Gor Mahia 4–1 at Nyayo Stadium, climbing from the bottom of the standings. Ochieng, formerly of AFC Leopards, rejected suggestions that the win was a stroke of luck, stressing that the squad is capable but has been undone by avoidable errors.
“It is not that we are a bad team. We have just made mistakes that have cost us. We are learning, and we hope to stabilise in defence and attack so that we can get more wins as the season progresses,” he said.
Ochieng, now the joint top scorer in the FKF Premier League with four goals, scored twice in the victory over Gor Mahia. He said it was gratifying that his goals contributed directly to a win.
“Sometimes you score, but the team still does not win. Scoring feels good, but winning feels better. I am happy the goals helped today,” he added.
Ochieng hopes to extend his fine form when APS Bomet face Sofapaka FC on Saturday.
