One of the more bizarre situations occurred in Russia, where Luis Enrique’s former assistant relied on artificial intelligence while managing the team

Sochi have returned to the top flight this season, but their campaign got off to a poor start, which ultimately led to the club parting ways with Spanish coach Roberto Moreno. However, disappointing results were not the only reason behind his dismissal.

Even during Sochi’s time in the Russian First League, Moreno employed methods that did not sit well with the club’s management — one of them being his reliance on artificial intelligence, specifically ChatGPT.

Former club CEO Andrey Orlov revealed that Moreno frequently turned to AI to organize players’ travel schedules, training sessions, and even match preparations. According to Orlov, using this tool became part of Moreno’s daily routine.

One of the longest trips in the Russian First League was the journey to Khabarovsk, and that is where the biggest issue arose. The AI produced a flawed plan in which the players would have gone without sleep for 28 hours. Naturally, the schedule had to be adjusted on the fly, creating major problems for Moreno.

Remarkably, Moreno also relied on ChatGPT when it came to transfers. He sent scouting reports of potential signings to the AI for “evaluation,” and based on the details provided, it even influenced the acquisition of Artur Shushenachev. ChatGPT was asked to choose between Shushenachev, Pisarsky and Meleshin — and selected Shushenachev.

It is worth noting that Moreno did not lose his job solely because of his use of artificial intelligence, but rather because he failed to draw a clear line between AI as a supporting tool and as a decision-maker.

Throughout his career, Moreno has managed several teams and also served as Spain’s national team coach for three matches when Luis Enrique had to step aside for personal reasons.
