Both Roy Keane and Gary Neville had a lot to say about the Dutchman
When Manchester United finally managed to tie three consecutive wins in a row (Brentford, Sheffield United and Copenhagen), only occasional football fans thought that the Red Devils are on their way to recovery. But in fact, they have just managed to win, it was tight in those games and the opponents were in crisis (Brentford), or bad (Sheffield United), or just had luck (Copenhagen). So, when the first real test came, the Red Devils failed big time. Not only did they suffer a heavy defeat from hated rivals Manchester City, but they shown to their fans and the world how weak and fragile they are. And now they are suffering criticism, especially Erik ten Hag.
My word…

The Dutchman is evidently in crisis and his time at Old Trafford is not a marry one anymore, as even the most loyal fans are now realizing that the former Ajax coach probably won‘t get them to the Champions League spot. And former United players cannot avoid criticizing Ten Hag anymore. Both Roy Kaene and Garry Neville analyzed the game and came to the same conclusion – the Dutchman is in deep trouble.
“He still wouldn't have a clue what his best starting team is. His head is spinning with the problems he's got at Man United. Where do you start, where do you finish? Defensively and physically they look all over the place. He'll have a sleepless night. City weren't at their best but they're just toying with United now. They're on different levels. I do feel for the United players. They're just short in every aspect — technically, tactically, physically they're so off it. It's a long way back for this team“ Keane told Sky Sports.
Former United‘s captain then gave suggestion to Ten Hag – change the captain.
“The first thing I would do is take the captaincy off him. I know it's a big decision but Fernandes is not captain material. He's a talented player, but from what I saw, he's whingeing, he's moaning, he's throwing his arms up in the air constantly. It really isn't acceptable. When you're talking about where do they make changes - board level, managers - I'd start with that because the manager is capable of doing that. Fernandes is a brilliant footballer but he's the opposite to what you want in a captain“ he said.
His former teammate Gary Neville ofter speaks of United as a TV pundit and tries to be as much positive as he can, but even he was critical of Ten Hag. First of all, he denied the Dutcman who claimed that his team “played three times this year against City and we played very good in all those games“.
“The performances of Manchester United against Manchester City have not been good. I was at the cup final sat with 90,000 other people. The performance was not good. That performance in the second half was appalling“ said Neville to Sky Sports.
He then started naming all Ten Hag‘s mistakes, starting with introducing Mason Mount for Sofyan Amrabat at half-time,.
“That was brave, if not a little bit reckless. He went too early. He opened up his midfield and got exposed. I don't think it was a great day for his substitutions. That performance in the second half was appalling. It wasn't a contest. It became a shambles. Changing the manager? Absolutely not. But there's no doubt he is having issues. He has been here 18 months and none of us can explain what United try to do. They play underdog football“ said Neville, also adding that Antony should have been red-carded for his incident with Jeremy Doky at the end of the game.
