Alain Jean Giresse (69), Lucien Favre (63), Domenec Torrent Font (59) and Francesco Guidolin (65) are in the quest for the role of a successor of recently sacked Charles Akonnor
Ghana sacked their coach Charles Akonnor on Monday night, following a dreadful 1-0 defeat to South Africa in the 2022 WC Qualifiers tie.
According to several reliable sources, as many as four foreign, veteran candidates are in the quest for a vacant position with the Black Stars.
Probably, the most known name on the list of potential managers is a French football legend Alain Jean Giresse (69). He has vast experience of working with African national teams since he's been in charge of Gabon, Senegal, Tunis and Mali twice.
His contenders for the role will be Lucien Favre (63), Domenec Torrent Font (59) and Francesco Guidolin (65).
Favre, a former Borussia Dortmund coach of Swiss origins, has been jobless ever since December 2020, when he was sacked from the BVB dugout.
66.7% of Mathew Amoah’s goals for Ghana came in FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

On the other hand, Font has spent most of his coaching career working as Pep Guardiola's assistant manager (at Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City). On 31 July 2020, Torrent was named in charge of Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A side Flamengo after agreeing to a one-and-a-half-year contract. On 9 November, after a 4–0 away loss against Atletico Mineiro, he was relieved of his duties.
Finally, Guidolin is an authentic journeyman who has worked for as many as 13 teams in Italy, but his last job was at Swansey back in 2016.
However, BBC has another list of potential candidates. Otto Addo, has served as chief scout for Ghana from 2013 to 2015, but his first and only head coach responsibility was when he took over as Hamburg U19 youth team coach. Unlike him, Milovan Rajevac is a veteran manager and fondly remembered, as he was already leading Ghana in 2010 World Cup tournament. Another target is Sellas Tetteh, a local coach who won gold for Under 20 Ghana squad in Egypt in 2009, and some of his players are still playing in the senior team. Finally, BBC mentions Marcel Desailly, a former France World Cup winner in 1998. He was already a candidate for the Ghana post a few years back, and now he is again in the fold.
It is understood that Ghana will appoint their new head coach on Friday.
