Freixa: We could sign Haaland. Font: If we are irresponsible, yes

Fire does not extinguish the fire, says the Greek proverb, but it seems that Toni Freixa never heard of it. Barcelona's presidential candidate is adding more fuel to his campaign by promising funds to bring difference-making players. Even though Barcelona is currently in disarray, and with the coronavirus pandemic showing no signs of backing down any time soon, Freixa thinks that the money will be available for new signing during the next transfer window. And not only it will be available, but it will be enough to sign a couple of big stars.

Victor Font, on the other side, thinks that it’s irresponsible since Barca is „a train going to a wall in full speed“. But what about Freixa? He surely knows how bad is the financial situation at Camp Nou. He does, but he apparently has the money.

"We have been working for some time now and we can say that we have reached an agreement of intent with an investor who will contribute 250 million euros for Barcelona Corporate, which consists of four business lines, in exchange for 49 percent. We will have the funds for the economic situation to improve so that we can make sporting decisions. And in 2021/22 we will incorporate three superstars: two in attack and one in defense. It's impossible for Koeman not to like them. They are unique players. Koeman will be the coach until the end of his contract, without any doubt. Giving stability to the coach and the team always pays off" said Friexa to RAC1.

When the journalist asked about the possibility that Erling Haaland or Kylian Mbappe sign for the Catalonian giants, Friexa admitted it was possible.

„We have a maxim: we will never talk about players until we present them. It's a bad strategy because you allow other clubs to step on your negotiation. But it is absolutely possible. That's what Barcelona must do: bring in difference-making players" said Friexa.

The other presidential candidate however doesn’t think so. In fact, he thinks it’s possible to sign the Norwegian forward, but that it would be irresponsible.

"Sign someone like Haaland?."If we are irresponsible,[we could do it yes. But if we want to do things as they should be done... Barcelona is a train going at 200 km/h towards a wall. We can't stretch our arms further than our sleeves will reach. The point is to have a good sporting structure. You have to help compensate for a squad that is unbalanced. Signing Haaland or Mbappe is for former Barcelona president Josep Lluis Nunez and Real Madrid president Florentino Perez's galacticos' model. Our model is different“ Font told the radio show 'Aqui, amb Josep Cuni'.

Font’s model is focused on keeping Lionel Messi and adding Xavi Hernandez.

"The sporting structure led by Xavi means that next year keeping Messi is key in sporting terms, and also in financial and institutional terms. We have to keep him here. I know there is pressure on Xavi Hernandez or Jordi Cruyff to not back my candidacy" Font told the media.
