Manager Scott Parker’s side is starting to play some good football, but they need points on the board
Wednesday night saw Edinson Cavani and Paul Pogba score to overturn Fulham’s early lead at Craven Cottage. And while the Red Devils are hogging the headlines because of their win and the fact they top the Premier League table again, Fulham manager Scott Parker and the London side’s fans will be wondering what it would take to finally start turning decent performances into much-needed points.
The Cottagers’ last league win was an unexpected away success at Leicester City in late November. Since then, they haven’t won a match over 90 minutes – their only win was the extra time elimination of Queen’s Park Rangers in the FA Cup. But in the biggest competition they can’t seem to crack it.
Although unbeaten in December, it only meant four points gained. It’s too little, but Parker believes it’s not too late.
“We all understand we need to win games. In saying that, we have just come out of a run of games where I think we have played seven of the top teams in this division. I am delighted where this team is after coming out of the run of fixtures, we have had over the last nine games. I’ve nothing but full praise for this team. We are going in the right direction, for sure we are.”
Maybe it can’t be called a revival just yet, but the improvement has coincided with Ademola Lookman’s good run of form. The youngster, who joined on loan from RB Leipzig in the summer, is currently the player involved in most Fulham goals. He was moved into centre forward position from the wing and was on target against Manchester United. Parker is delighted to see the former Everton winger thrive in West London.
“Ademola is getting a run of games, which he has probably not had over the course of the past couple of years. He is operating in the best league in the world here, against the best defenders, and showing his quality every single week. He needs to keep improving and keep doing it. He is going to be vital for us this year. He is a player in this team that can score goals for us, and that’s what we need.”
With recent dip in form of both Newcastle United and Burnley, Fulham will feel that they can indeed lift themselves out of the Premier League relegation zone. They are currently 18th in the table with 17th-placed Burnley four points above them, albeit with a game in hand.
