Both clubs who are sponsored by the same betting firm, are set to lose their sponsorship deal that has been in place for the last two years

Two of the biggest and most supported clubs in the land, Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards, are set to be left in the hunt for new partners once again after their current club sponsor has reportedly terminated their contracts with the two sides.

According to insiders, both clubs who are sponsored by the same betting firm, are set to lose their sponsorship deal that has been in place for the last two years after the company terminated their supposed three year deal in unclear circumstances.

Back in June 2020, the gaming firm had entered into an agreement with the Mashemeji Derby rivals, giving K’Ogalo a reported 55 million shillings and Ingwe 40 million shillings.

In the second year however, the amount received by the clubs was slashed by some percentage as the two sides said the development was due to the reduced revenue in the betting industry, the Covid-19 pandemic and government interference with Gor understood to be receiving 30 million and Ingwe 20 million in the new deal.

However with the firm terminating the deal with one year still left, the two sides who have always had financial challenges are faced with the challenge of wooing new potential investors with the state of football in the country at a poor state currently owing to the suspension from world football governing body FIFA.

“It is true we have received a letter from the firm confirming the termination of their sponsorship with us. They have cited difficulties in their business operations which have been in existence since coronavirus hit the country two years ago,” AFC Leopards chairman Dan Shikanda is quoted confirming on the Nation.

“As AFC Leopards we want to thank them because they have assisted us financially and our operations with them have been very smooth. We now have to focus on getting a new sponsor before next season kicks off and I believe we shall succeed," he said.

Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards struggled when their previous sponsor left, leaving the clubs to depend on fans, members and other well-wishers to honour matches and settle player allowances at times.

The two were hit hard given that they had to look for finances to help the team honour both local and continental matches, for Gor, without a financial partner.
