Gor Mahia coach laments costly errors in defeat to Police FC

Gor Mahia faced an unexpected setback in their match against Kenya Police FC on Saturday afternoon, going down 3-1 to the Salim Babu-led law enforcers at the Police Sacco Grounds.

The record league champions went into the game with an unblemished record of 19 unbeaten league games this season and a buffer of ten points at the helm of the log. However, after 90 minutes, Gor Mahia found themselves on the wrong end of a 3-1 defeat.

The match began with promise for Gor Mahia as in-form midfielder Austin Odhiambo seized an early opportunity to put his team in the lead in the sixth minute of the match.

However, the momentum quickly shifted in the second phase of the game as Kenya Police FC mounted a determined comeback, fueled by goals from two former Gor Mahia players, Tito Okello, who netted twice, and Kenneth Muguna.

The result maintained Babu’s perfect record as police coach; he has won all four games he has handled at the club.

The loss was a bitter pill to swallow for Gor Mahia and their fans, who had grown accustomed to dominance on the field.

Coach Jonathan McKinstry, visibly disappointed by the outcome, expressed his frustration with his team's performance.

"We just needed to cover better for the first goal and were not good in the second half. We have to rise and be ready for next week against Ulinzi Stars," the former Uganda Cranes boss said in his post-match remarks.

In his post-match analysis, McKinstry highlighted deficiencies in Gor Mahia's gameplay, particularly in their inability to maintain possession and execute precise passes to their forwards, like league top scorer Benson Omalla and the wingers.

"We didn't want just to have the ball and even the straight passes could not reach Benson Omalla and the wingers. We have been disappointed with the goals we have conceded but this is football," he added.

Gor Mahia will have a chance to make amends when they play Ulinzi Stars in a week at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.
