“Why? Peace has defined our season, and peace is our message. We will be waving them to also add colour to our big day. We need your numbers and energy on the final day. Spread the word.”
K’Ogalo reclaimed the FKF Premier League title on Sunday, 24 May, without kicking a ball after APS Bomet stunned AFC Leopards 2-1 at Kericho Green Stadium to mathematically end Ingwe’s title chase.
The triumph handed Gor Mahia their 22nd league title and marked a successful first season in charge for Akonnor despite the club enduring a difficult and emotional campaign both on and off the pitch.
The season began disappointingly for the Green Army, with fans at Kasarani Stadium watching their side suffer a shock 1-0 defeat to Bidco United courtesy of a Newton Ochieng strike on the opening day.
Akonnor quickly steadied the ship and responded with four consecutive victories, but another rough spell in late November and December threatened to derail their ambitions.
During that difficult run, Gor Mahia suffered a humiliating 4-1 defeat to APS Bomet, lost the Mashemeji Derby to AFC Leopards and managed only one win across a frustrating stretch of fixtures.
Away from football matters, the club also faced emotional moments following the death of club patron Raila Odinga, a loss that deeply affected both the team and supporters.
The season further brought heartbreak and chaos for the record champions. Gor missed out on continental football, watched their clash against Nairobi United abandoned midway amid crowd trouble that left some fans injured, exited the Mozzart Bet Cup, and also lost striker Felix Oluoch to injury.
Yet despite the setbacks and tense moments, K’Ogalo remained composed and eventually marched to another league crown.
The title was officially confirmed after APS Bomet, coached by Gor Mahia legend Sammy ‘Pamzo’ Omollo, defeated AFC Leopards to extinguish Ingwe’s hopes of a first league title since 1998.
Philip Wasai scored twice within three minutes in the second half to hand APS Bomet victory, with Daniel Odhiambo’s late own goal proving only a consolation for Leopards.
Gor Mahia were initially scheduled to face Mara Sugar FC on Sunday, but the fixture was postponed by the Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT) over a venue dispute.
Attention now shifts to Nyayo Stadium, where Akonnor, his players, and thousands of Gor Mahia supporters are expected to celebrate yet another chapter in the club’s rich history.
