K’Ogalo moved closer to what would be their 22nd league title after a hard fought 2-1 victory over Mathare United

With the FKF Premier League approaching its homestretch and the title race taking shape, Gor Mahia head coach Charkes Akonnor has sent a rallying call to the Green Army.

K’Ogalo moved closer to what would be their 22nd league title after a hard fought 2-1 victory over Mathare United in a match played at the Nyayo National Stadium on Saturday, 28 February.

After a goalless first half, Ghanaian import Ebenezer Assifuah came on and broke the deadlock in the 67th minute before Enock Morrison grabbed the winner in the 88th minute from the spot after Dennis Okoth had drawn Mathare level five minutes earlier.

Throughout the match, the fans who had braved the cold weather kept pushing the team, much to the admiration of Akonnor, who now called for more collaboration.

We urge our fans to continue turning up in large numbers to support and push the team because it is a collective effort,” said Akonnor.

At half time, Gor Mahia made a triple substitution; bringing on Paul Ochuoga, Bryton Onyona and Assufuah for Lewis Bandi, Levin Odhiambo and Ebenezer Adukwaw and the former Black Stars head coach took time to explain the tactical substitutions that won the match.

We brought in Paul, Bryton and Assifuah because we thought the game had little pace. They came on and gave us more attacking options while the team also played with much aggression in the second half and from that, we created more chances and managed to get goals,” explained Akonnor.

The 51-year-old also appreciated Mathare United's tactical awareness in the match after the 2008 champions gave his side serious headaches in the Saturday afternoon encounter.

“I was so impressed with the opponent's strong tactical approach. They got their tactics right and gave us difficulties," the tactician offered.

Next up for the 21-time record league champions is their rescheduled round 22 clash against Posta Rangers on Thursday 5 March.
