The 24-year-old striker has enjoyed a breakthrough 2025/26 campaign, scoring 15 goals for the English lower-tier side to emerge as one of the club’s standout performers.
His impressive form earned him a maiden call-up to the Harambee Stars squad announced on Monday for the June international friendlies against Kyrgyzstan and Palestine.
Obiero will be joined in the national team by Wealdstone teammate Deon Woodman, who also received his first senior Kenya call-up.
The former Huddersfield Town player revealed that a conversation with former Wealdstone coach Sam Cox before the season proved decisive after the tactician deployed him in his preferred striker role.
“The last three seasons I’ve played in different positions, so it’s hard to get a rhythm. But with Coxy [Sam Cox], I had a discussion with him in pre-season about playing striker.
He gave me the opportunity to play there, and that’s what really kick-started it, playing in my position, getting consistent games, getting that confidence back and hitting the net,” Obiero said in an interview with the FA.
“Also, I’m a big believer in Jesus Christ, so he’s helped me a lot. Not just in football but in life in general.”
Obiero, who has now made more than 150 appearances for Wealdstone, admitted the club holds a special place in his heart.
“It means a lot, that’s why I’ve been here all this time. It holds a special place in my heart, especially the boys in the changing room.
Every season, I’ve loved the changing room, the people here. And to create memories and make history, that’s what I came here for,” he added.
His outstanding season saw him voted the club’s Players’ Player of the Season by teammates, while he also walked away with the Golden Boot award after finishing as the club’s top scorer.
Obiero’s campaign was highlighted by the first hat-trick of his career against Hartlepool United, while he also contributed three assists to cap a prolific season in the National League.
The striker comes from a footballing family. He is the elder brother of Harambee Stars midfielder Zech Obiero, who is also part of the national team squad, while their father, Henry Obiero, previously played for Gor Mahia.
