Going into the match, K’Ogalo were on an impressive run of form, having won six of their last seven games, which placed them at the summit of the league table with 19 points.

League newbies APS Bomet, on the other hand, have had a poor start to life in the top flight, winning only one of their opening eight league matches.

Aware of the huge task that awaits in the Mashemeji Derby set for Saturday, 29 November, at Nyayo Stadium, K’Ogalo head coach Charles Akonnor made nine changes to the team that started their last match against Tusker, with only goalkeeper Bryne Omondi and Michael Kibwage retaining their places.

Despite not being at their usual best, Gor started the match as the better side, controlling the midfield through Lawrence Juma and earned the match’s first corner kick in the fifth minute.

Juma stepped up to take the corner kick, which Francis Omondi failed to clear, giving Ghanaian forward George Amonoo room to strike the ball into the back of the net and give K'Ogalo an early lead.

The goal was crucial for Amonoo as it was his first for the club and a reprieve for the penalty he spurned against Bidco United in their season opener.

Reacting to going down, APS grew into the match and started pinning Gor Mahia into their own half, with the changes visibly taking a toll on K’Ogalo’s rhythm.

In the 37th minute, Bomet found a free kick on the right side that Edward Masembe excellently took, but Bryne was equal to the task and parried it away for safety.

Bomet's efforts would finally pay off in the 39th minute when Michael Kibwage committed a foul in the penalty area. Hansel Ochieng stepped forward to send Bryne the wrong way and level the scores.

Buoyed by their equaliser, the Law Enforcers kept pushing and once again reaped benefits, Hansel picking the ball inside the box before unleashing a low shot to the bottom right corner and into the back of the net to give APS the lead in the 43rd minute.

In the second half, Akonnor in quick succession introduced Austin Odhiambo, Enock Morrison, Paul Ochuoga and Sharif Musa for Samuel Kapen, Ben Stanley, Chris Ochieng and Levin Odhiambo in a bid to add more punch to their attack.

Musa had an immediate impact, bringing in a cross that was headed inches wide by Ebenezer Edukwaw.

The Ghanaian was back at it again with a shot from Musa's cross, but it was blocked for a corner in the 51st minute.

In the 65th minute, APS got a chance to score a third and potentially kill the game, but Philip Wasai headed directly into the hands of Bryne.

As the match entered the final 20 minutes, Gor Mahia were in all-out attack mode, but with nothing to show for it on the scoreline.

In a more disheartening manner to the home side, against the run of play, Lawrence Kibet picked a pass in the box, took a shot that Bryne punched away, but Hansel was there to complete his hat-trick in the 78th minute.

As Gor Mahia fans started streaming out of the stadium, the players were chasing the game, but all their efforts were thwarted by Bob Cetric in the APS goal as well as the Masembe-marshalled defense.

However, there was still time for APS to grab a fourth as Rodgers Kipkemoi, in a one-on-one with Omondi, looped the ball past the onrushing Harambee Stars custodian to drill the final nail in Gor Mahia's coffin in the 87th minute.

In the end, the Mozzart Bet-sponsored APS were able to hold on to the lead and secure their second win of the season.

In effect, the Law Enforcers moved to 17th on the log standings with eight points as the numerous changes halted Gor Mahia’s momentum ahead of the Mashemeji Derby.
