Gor Mahia vs Bandari match prematurely halted by fan riots

Gor Mahia’s rescheduled fixture against Bandari at Ukunda Showground was halted prematurely on Wednesday afternoon after a section of supporters twice affected proceedings with minutes left to play.

The unfortunate incident occurred around the 80th minute, moments after hosts Bandari had scored their second goal to go 2-0 up.

From the TV cameras, a section of supporters behind the Bandari goal seemed to be descending from their stands and making their way closer to the pitch as Gor Mahia prepared to take a set piece.

It was then that referee Kelvin Maina stopped play, gesturing all players to converge at the middle of the pitch.

After a brief stoppage - of around 20 minutes - play resumed but was stopped almost immediately, the game unable to go on despite cameras showing that a sizeable number of supporters had exited the grounds.

A Bandari FC statement read on X: “Play has been halted after Gor Mahia fans started to riot. Police presence in the stands to calm the situation.”

With live broadcast cut, Bandari announced 12 minutes later that fans had been "cleared out of the stadium", with play going on to the end.

No goals were exchanged in the period, with Bandari going out 2-0 winners to maintain their unbeaten start to the season but condemn Gor Mahia to a second defeat in 10 days.

After a barren draw in the first-half, Gor Mahia endured a tough second period when their skipper Geoffrey Ochieng was sent off for a last-man tackle on Izzadin Juma.

With the resulting freekick, Geoffrey Ojunga arrowed a right-footed shot to the top corner and past a hapless Caleb Omondi before Beja Nyamawi slot home a second for Bandari with 12 minutes remaining.
