Gor Mahia's thorny road to Cup final

K'Ogalo will have to overcome some of this season's best sides in FKF Cup.

After eliminating Mara Sugar in the Round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinal, Gor Mahia are now in for some crunch fixtures if they go all the way to the final.

When you add the FKFPL matches scheduled for this month going by the draft fixture, it is without a doubt that the league defending Champions will have a tough month and need to do what they do best; thrive despite the circumstances.

Gor could play six more matches in June, to add to the two that they have already played this month. But this is not something new to them, having been in an almost similar position in the past 20 days.

Here is how it could look for Gor Mahia in the remaining days of June;

FKF CUP

Gor Mahia could play two matches this week, with the FKF Cup quarter-final set for Thursday, and the semifinal three days later if they advance.

If they qualify to the final of the CUP, K'Ogalo will have a 75 percent chance of meeting either Bandari, Tusker, or AFC leopards on a date that remains unknown.

This will come after meeting Kariobangi Sharks in the quarterfinal on Thursday, a team that has specialized in this Cup the past 4 seasons, including winning it in 2018 and dumping Gor Mahia out in the 2019 quarterfinal.

If Gor manage to go past Sharks and into the semifinal, they will meet either Bidco United or Nairobi City Stars. The two teams have had a good run in the Cup this season and either of them will give Gor a run for their money. Both teams have conceded one goal a-piece in regulation time in the third rounds they have played.

Either Bandari, Equity FC, AFC Leopards, or Tusker FC will be waiting in the final if Gor make it out of the semi. Tusker and AFC are in the frontline in contention of the FKFPL title as well as being at the top of the table by June 30th but they will both be fancying a double.

But at the final, Gor Mahia know what exactly is at stake and will toil towards that; the only ticket to represent the country in the CAF Confederation Cup, the winner's prize money notwithstanding.

FKFPL

Once done with the FKF CUP, Gor Mahia will slide back to league matches four days later against Mathare United, a team that has struggled throughout this season so far but under new stewardship in Frank Ouna

Sitting 7 points off the league leaders Tusker who will as well have tough Cup fixtures, Gor Mahia will want to continue their five-match winning streak with a win over the slum boys.

Up next after Mathare United will be a home encounter against Sofapaka on June 20th, a team that has been blowing hot and cold but remains upbeat of a top-five finish, at least according to their coach Ken Odhiambo.

The defending Champions beat Sofapaka at Wundanyi 2-1 with goals from Tito Okello and Alpha Onyango and will want to replicate the same and do a league double over them.

The last match of the month for Vaz Pinto's side will be another home match against Bandari FC, another team in the FKF Cup competition that would meet with Gor Mahia in the finals if both of them make it.

Gor whipped Bandari at Mbaraki and will want to capitalize on the home advantage. Bandari have not been a pushover on the road, having lost only twice in their six trips to Nairobi. Will Gor do a double over them?
