Greenwood gamble: Marseille braced for storm around their €80m star

Mason Greenwood wants to stay in France, but Europe's heavyweights are circling, and Marseille could cash in big while Manchester United wait for their slice of the deal

Two seasons in France have been enough for Mason Greenwood to remind Europe why he was once considered one of England's brightest talents. The former Manchester United forward has been one of Ligue 1's standout performers for a second straight campaign, but despite his success at Marseille, a turbulent few months could now await the 24-year-old.

According to French outlet L'Equipe, Greenwood would prefer to remain at the Velodrome, with both he and his family reportedly settled and happy there. Still, Marseille are expected to sell several players in order to improve their financial situation, and Greenwood has naturally emerged as the club's most valuable asset despite being under contract until 2029.

The ex-Manchester United and Getafe attacker is attracting major interest across Europe, with clubs from Italy, Spain, Germany and Turkey closely monitoring his situation. Some have already opened talks with his representatives.

A return to the Premier League still appears unlikely, however. The fallout from the 2022 allegations involving the physical abuse of his partner continues to make Greenwood a controversial figure in England, even though the rest of Europe's elite leagues remain open to him.

L'Equipe adds that several transfer market experts value Greenwood between €40m and €50m, but Marseille are aiming far higher. The French giants are reportedly hoping to earn between €70m and €80m for one of their prized stars - an ambitious figure considering Premier League clubs, traditionally football's biggest spenders, are unlikely to enter the race.

There is also another layer to the story. Manchester United still hold a 40 per cent sell-on clause after agreeing to Greenwood's €26m move to Marseille two years ago, meaning the English club could land a sizeable financial boost if a blockbuster transfer materialises.

Greenwood has scored 48 goals and provided 16 assists in 80 appearances for Olympique de Marseille across the last two seasons. Heading into the final round of Ligue 1 fixtures, he also sits joint-second in the scoring charts with 16 goals alongside Joaquin Panichelli.
