This comes after the 22-year-old’s strike for her club - FC Wacker Innsbruck - dating back to 12 October, beat 11 other nominations to clinch the top award.

Makungu’s goal, which helped her side to a 3-1 win, saw the Kenyan receive the ball on the left wing, before cutting inside to unleash a right-footed effort into the top corner from just outside the box.

Reacting to the online poll results, Makungu posted on her timelines saying: “Happy New Year. God did. Thank you all for your participation.”

The Goal of the Round award continues Makungu’s impressive run of form in Austria this season, in which she has found the net four times in all competitions.

The Acakoro Football Academy product, who made her Harambee Starlets debut in 2020, has started in eight of her team’s 11 league matches this season, playing for a total of 671 minutes.

Makungu joined Innsbruck back in September 2022, having landed an opportunity straight from Acakoro.

In June last year, the attacking midfielder said she desired to be included back in the women’s national team, at a time Kenya were readying themselves up for a Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Qualifier against The Gambia.

Then, she said: “Of course, it is every player’s dream to get to the national team and I have that ambition as well. I have played at the junior levels, and I am crossing my fingers that I can get an opportunity to represent the country in the journey to WAFCON.

I have worked hard this season and I believe I have shown good form. If given a chance, I am ready to give my best for my country. It is a really important tournament and personally, it has been my dream to play there.”

With Harambee Starlets back at the big stage for the first time since 2016, Makungu will fancy her chances, given her current run of form.

Wacker Innsbruck, currently fifth in the second-tier league with 19 points, return to action on 15 February against third-placed FC Pinzgau Saalfelden.
