Waweru leaves Sligo following a difficult season in which he found himself increasingly on the fringes after dropping down the pecking order.
The move marks a return to familiar territory for the forward, who previously enjoyed a highly successful loan spell with the Ramblers in 2023.
Confirming the signing, Cobh Ramblers released a light-hearted statement welcoming back the Kenyan-eligible attacker.
“Wise men say, only fools rush in, but we cannot help falling in love with Waweru. We are delighted to announce the signing of Wilson Waweru from Sligo Rovers.
Wilson made himself a fan favourite during a very successful loan spell at St Colman’s Park in 2023. Welcome back, Wilson. The new threads look good on you,” read a statement from the club.
Born in Ireland to Kenyan parents, Waweru grew up in Galway and came through the Galway United academy.
He made his senior debut at just 17 and played a key role as the club finished second in the league.
His 2023 loan stint at Cobh Ramblers proved to be a breakthrough campaign, as he made 33 league appearances, scored 13 goals and helped the club lift the Munster Senior Cup.
That form earned him a move to League of Ireland Premier Division side Sligo Rovers ahead of the 2024 season.
Despite limited opportunities at Sligo, Waweru has remained on the radar of the Kenya national team.
Former Harambee Stars head coach Engin Firat previously revealed his intention to call up the forward, citing passport complications as the main obstacle.
“I wanted to bring in two new players for the national team, but dealing with passport issues in Kenya is far from simple. These boys have Kenyan heritage, but securing a Kenyan passport is not easy. I thought it would be straightforward, but I realised it’s not,” said Firat.
Cobh Ramblers, founded in 1922 and elected to the League of Ireland in 1985, are based in Cobh, County Cork, and play their home matches at St Colman’s Park in claret and blue.
The club boasts a rich history and has produced notable figures, including former Ireland and Manchester United captain Roy Keane, former Manchester City midfielder Stephen Ireland and Westlife singer Nicky Byrne.
Waweru will now look to reignite his career at a club where he is already a proven favorite.
