The Parliamentarians, who were led by Bunge FC captain and Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo, on Wednesday, 30 July, visited Harambee Stars' training base at the Police Sacco Stadium and handed over a financial token of Ksh1 million.
The long-awaited CHAN is now two days away, with the tournament kicking off on Saturday, 2 August. However, Kenya will take to the field a day later, to face DR Congo in what will also be the first CHAN match on Kenyan soil.
Speaking to the media, Amollo emphasised the importance of the tournament to the nation, urging all Kenyans to rally behind the team.
“We visited the team in our capacity as Bunge FC- the football team in the Kenyan parliament to encourage the boys and to ensure everything is well and ready before the big game on Sunday.
We have a token of Ksh1 million from members' personal contributions as our way of lifting their morale. Most of these players play locally and might not be privileged as their foreign-based counterparts, and so we thought this would go a long way in boosting their morale,” said Amollo.
On his part, the team's vice captain and Embakasi South MP Musili Mawathe called for the stadium to be painted red ahead of the DR Congo opening clash.
“The team will put on their red jersey on Sunday, and therefore I urge all Kenyans coming to Kasarani to put on their red jerseys and cheer the team as loudly as possible. This is a historic moment for the nation,” said Mawathe.
The MPs' delegation also included Bumula MP Jack Wamboka, Migori Senator Eddy Oketch, Kipkelion East MP Joseph Cherorot, among others, and were accompanied by former Kenya international George Sunguti, who coaches Bunge FC.
The amount adds to a previous Ksh5 million donated to the team by President William Ruto during his visit on Wednesday, 16 July and Ksh500,000 and Ksh200,000 from Sports CS Salim Mvurya and FKF President Hussein Mohamed when the team first reported to camp.
