Instead of playing a relaxed friendly match against some local boys, the coach, Patrick Sangwa's men, managed to disgrace themselves utterly
The Burundi national football team have never participated in the FIFA World Cup, while their only appearance at the African Cup of Nations came in 2019, when they lost all three group stage clashes against Nigeria, Madagascar, and Guinea, without scoring a goal.
Based on the news coming from this country, it will be a long wait before the Swallows see a notable result at major tournaments.
🇧🇮 Burundi have not only missed out on World Cup qualification, but they also appear to have been beaten by their own B team!

Based on the Facebook graphic, it seems their A team consisting of international players lost to a B team of local players due to a last-minute goal! pic.twitter.com/vYgOtRc4z0
Namely, the head coach, Patrick Sangwa's men managed to utterly embarrass themselves, losing to their B team, which consisted of only local players. Moreover, they were 3-0 down after half an hour (?!), bounced back and levelled, but eventually conceded a late winner from the spot, falling short 4-3!
Although their achievements haven't been particularly remarkable, Burundi still managed to collect ten points in the latest World Cup qualifiers, in a group alongside the Ivory Coast, Gabon, Gambia, Kenya, and Seychelles.
The Swallows beat the Pirates (twice) and the Scorpions, and drew against Harambee Stars 1-1. In their second qualifying meeting, Benni McCarthy's men brushed them aside in Bujumbura thanks to Ryan Ogam's winner.
In the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, Burundi finished third in their group, above Malawi and behind Senegal and Burkina Faso, which secured their spots in Morocco.
Given their current form, the Swallows are fortunate not to have made it to the continental tournament.
