Slot has already been the coach of AZ Alkmaar and Feyenoord — is it time for him to complete the great Dutch trio?

Ajax have reportedly taken a bold step in their search for a new head coach, making an approach for Arne Slot, who is currently in charge of Liverpool. The move comes as technical director Jordi Cruijff steps up efforts to find a long-term replacement and reshape the club’s sporting direction.

The Amsterdam side are actively assessing several high-profile names as they look to rebuild after a turbulent spell, although Slot is believed to remain focused on his role in England despite a demanding campaign.

While attention within Ajax is split between the current season and future planning, Cruijff is working in the background to secure a permanent solution following the interim spell of Oscar Garcia. Girona coach Michel Sanchez is still viewed as the frontrunner, but reports from De Telegraaf suggest Ajax have also explored the possibility of bringing Slot back to the Netherlands.

Cruijff is said to regard Slot as one of only two Dutch coaches currently capable of leading the club, alongside Peter Bosz, who recently committed his future to PSV Eindhoven. However, early contact with Slot reportedly produced little optimism, with neither the manager nor Liverpool showing any intention of parting ways.

Journalist Mike Verweij, speaking on the Kick-off podcast, summarised the situation by saying Ajax had indeed made their move but received a clear message that Slot is fully committed to his current project in England and not considering a return at this stage of his career.

Slot’s reputation in Dutch football remains strong thanks to his successful spell with Feyenoord, where he won the Eredivisie title in 2022–23 and the KNVB Cup the following season, while also reaching the final of the inaugural Conference League.

Despite some inconsistency at Liverpool this season, Slot remains under contract at Anfield until 2027 and is focused on stabilising results and securing Champions League qualification after a difficult title defence.

With Slot effectively out of reach, Ajax are expected to turn their attention elsewhere as Cruijff continues to shape plans for a major summer rebuild aimed at restoring the club’s domestic dominance and European standing.
