Toulouse midfielder suffers double leg fracture against Japan, ruling him out for the season and putting his 2026 World Cup dreams in serious jeopardy
Ghana were left shattered on Friday after Francis Abu suffered a horrific double leg fracture in the friendly against Japan - an injury so serious it could rule him out of the entire season and the upcoming World Cup.
The incident unfolded when Ao Tanaka, unaware of Abu charging in, collided forcefully with the Toulouse midfielder's lower leg. Abu collapsed instantly, screaming in pain, before being stretchered off and rushed to hospital.
Right after coming off, Japan’s Aoi Tanaka walked straight to Otto Addo to apologise for Francis Abu’s injury.

Initial fears were confirmed: a double fracture of the tibia and fibula. Tanaka apologised on the spot, visibly shaken, while medical teams from both nations debated the safest way forward. With the risk of travel deemed too high, Abu will undergo immediate surgery in Japan.
It's a devastating blow for the 24-year-old, who had broken into the Toulouse side this season after arriving from Cercle Brugge. Now, after just eight appearances, his campaign is over.
