Achesa highlights the significance of investing in a side hustle

Sofapaka left-back Titus Achesa is the latest local-based player to reveal how investing in a side hustle has helped him make ends meet comfortably.

While sportsmen were left with bitter mouths after President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered the deferment of action as a way of curbing the spread of coronavirus a move which locked their sources of livelihood, the dead ball specialist can still afford a smile thanks to his thriving chicken business.

The fleet-footed player, who helped dispel the notion that footballers squander their fortunes when active only to slump into abject poverty once they retire or when sports are halted, disclosed that he was profiting from the business he began in 2015 after joining Posta Rangers.

The Harambee Stars trialist said, he secured a soft loan from, his employer to set up the business in Gachie and it has since picked up to guarantee his family a comfortable life, the suspension of sporting activities notwithstanding.

I am among the players who heeded the call to invest while active. When I joined Rangers, I pooled resources and began the chicken business, a decision I never regret making. The profits I make from selling chicken and eggs are enough to sustain my family,” he said.

Achesa who joined Posta from the defunct Nakuru All Stars noted that the business not only helps fill his collection basket but keeps him occupied when not on the pitch. He encouraged his counterparts to spare part of their earnings ad invest in education and business.

The business gives me a reason not to engage on purposeless activities. I normally spend my free time in attending to my chicken contrary to the belief that footballers idle around after training. I call on my colleagues to make hay while the sun shines,” he added.
