Nashon Wekesa has already been christened "lucky boy" by his teammates at KCB Football Club.
Wekesa earned the moniker after Lady Luck smiled at him during their 2025-2026 FKF Premier League season opener against 12-time champions Tusker FC.

The clash, staged at Kasarani Stadium on Friday, 19 September, witnessed a grand refereeing controversy as Wekesa avoided a sending off despite receiving two yellow cards from FIFA referee Dickens Mimisa.
The right back had his name taken in the first half for a foul on Congolese youngster David Polepole, before collecting his second yellow after conceding a penalty in the second stanza
In a bizarre turn of events, Mimisa failed to brandish the red card as expected, and neither did Tusker players nor their technical bench protest the decision, allowing Wekesa to stay on the pitch until the final whistle.
Even more puzzling, the other match officials did not intervene to help Mimisa redeem himself before the league's two-time Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Golden Boot winner, Erick Kapaito, stepped up and skied the free hit from twelve yards.
In an exclusive interview with Mozzart Sport, the 23-year-old defender has opened up on the incident and how one of his teammates helped distract Mimisa from dishing out a red card.
Wekesa, who joined the Bankers in July 2022 from Zetech Titans FC, admitted that he only learnt of his lucky escape from his teammate Dennis Maruti moments after Kapaito missed the penalty.
“A few minutes after the penalty, Maruti came and informed me that I should have left the pitch after the second yellow card.
It was at that moment that it dawned on me that I had been cautioned in the first half and should have been sent off after the second yellow card.
I got confused and even lost concentration for a while as I tried to process it, but with our resolve to start the season with a win, I regained focus and played through to the final whistle,” he opened up.
The Lugari Boys alumnus recounted how Maruti even stepped in and claimed responsibility for conceding the penalty, diverting Mimisa’s focus at a crucial moment.
Although the civil engineer did not caution Maruti, as the dreadlocked midfielder had hoped to get Wekesa off the hook, the distraction was enough to prevent the referee from brandishing a red card.
“After the referee pointed to the spot, Maruti went up to him and claimed he had committed the foul. He did not succeed in convincing him, as I was still shown the yellow card.
But his intervention may have caused enough confusion, because the referee never produced the red card,” he narrated.
Meanwhile, Wekesa disclosed that the KCB dressing room was full of laughter after the final whistle, as the team reflected on the incident.
"Everyone was laughing at me and jokingly asking about the source of my luck. They have since nicknamed me lucky boy. I really consider myself a very lucky man,” he said.
Wekesa has since stepped away from social media to shield himself from cyberbullying and maintain a clear focus on the next game.
“I knew the incident would trend, and not everyone would have positive thoughts about it. My focus is fully trained on the next game,” added the defender.
