Speaking after the match, Matano said the Bankers approached the contest with a clear tactical brief: to blunt Ingwe’s attacking edge.
The veteran tactician singled out winger Tyson Otieno and creative midfielder Kelly Madada as the main threats they had earmarked before kick-off.
“We had to make sure Tyson and Madada do not function and also ensure their wingers do not get to influence the game, such as the likes of (James) Kinyanjui,” said Matano.
The plan worked to perfection.
After a goalless first half, KCB struck in the 68th minute when David Sakwa ghosted past defender Kayci Odhiambo to head home beyond goalkeeper Humphrey Katasi.
The goal proved decisive as KCB defended resolutely to secure all three points and dent Leopards’ title charge.
Leopards, who came into the tie second on 40 points and breathing down the neck of leaders Gor Mahia, controlled large spells of possession but struggled to break down a compact and disciplined KCB backline.
The defeat leaves Ingwe trailing Gor Mahia by six points, with both sides having played 21 matches.
It also deals a significant blow to Leopards’ pursuit of a first league title since 1998.
For KCB, who started the day eighth on 29 points, the victory showed their ability to frustrate and outwit stronger opponents through tactical discipline and organization.
Leopards head coach Fred Ambani remained forward-looking despite the setback.
“This is the time to motivate players and let them know there is an important game ahead that we need to focus on,” he said.
Ambani’s men now face another stern test against high-flying Shabana in their next fixture.
The two sides are level on 40 points, with Leopards ahead only on goal difference, a clash that could significantly reshape the top of the table.
With Gor Mahia maintaining a six-point advantage at the summit, the pressure is firmly on Ingwe to respond swiftly and keep their fading title hopes alive.
