Right back Alvin ‘Chicha’ Ochieng avers that the loan spell he is having at Shabana will shape him to fairly compete with Kenyan international Rooney Onyango for first-team roles at Gor Mahia next season.
The record league champions loaned out Chicha to Shabana in the mid-season transfer window in a move aimed at giving him playing time after spending the better part of the first leg warming the bench.
Chicha joined Gor in the off-season transfer window from FC Talanta but was sparingly used as coach Johnathan McKinstry has been having a strong preference for Onyango at right back.
The remarkable success Onyango who also arrived at Gor before the start of the season has been having muscled out skipper and experienced right-back Philemon Otieno out of the first team as is the first rising Paul Ochuoga.
Reports from Gor indicate that Philemon who occasionally plays as a left-back has been preparing for his transition to central defence.
Chicha revealed his intention of making the best out of the platform and game time at Shabana to regain his form, a tool he hopes to use and win the confidence of McKinstry in the new season.
“I am sure I will return to Gor a better player. The goal is to be in good shape, form and ready to compete by the time the loan deal ends. The dream to become a regular player at Gor is very much alive,” said the former national U20 team defender.
While the long-term plan is to thrive at Gor and scale to the next phase of his career, Chicha says getting Shabana out of the woods is what preoccupies his immediate plan and thoughts.
The Glamour Boys have been struggling since their return to the top tier and risk being ejected from the top tier if their woeful run persists.
The club acquired a good number of decent players in the brief window in a bid to save face and further, went for coach Samuel ‘Pamzo’ Omollo’s expertise.
“We have what it takes to save ourselves from sinking to the Super League,” said the former Kisumu All Stars defender.
