Igor Tudor sacked after 44 days as Spurs boss

The Croatian managed only one win after seven games in charge

It was the beginning of March when the news first broke out that Igor Tudor could be sacked as Tottenham boss after less than a month in charge. He took over the hot seat in the Spurs' dugout on February 13 as a firefighter, but the results and the performances were terrible so the Spurs hierarchy was contemplating the sack. Eventually it didn’t happen then, but today it did. Tottenham announced on Sunday afternoon that they ‘mutually agreed’ to part ways with the Croatian coach.

We thank Igor, Tomislav and Riccardo for their efforts during the past six weeks, in which they worked tirelessly. We also acknowledge the bereavement that Igor has recently suffered and send our support to him and his family at this difficult time. An update on a new Head Coach will be provided in due course” reads a short statement from the North London club.

All in all, the former Juventus and Marseille manager lasted only 44 days in London and the results speak for themselves. He led the Spurs in only seven games in all competition and won only one match – the return leg against Atletico Madrid. Apart from that, he managed a draw with Liverpool and everything else was a disaster as he had five defeats, out of which the last one was the worst – a 3-0 loss at home to a direct relegation rival Nottingham Forest.

Igor Tudor took over Tottenham Hotspur in 16th place, with a five-point cushion above the relegation zone. He leaves them in 17th, with just a one-point advantage over 18th-placed West Ham United. In the end, after Tudor’s tenure, the Opta Sports supercomputer gives Tottenham a 27% chance of being relegated from the Premier League. Before the Croatian arrived—whose debut ended in a heavy 4–1 defeat to Arsenal FC—that probability stood at just 4%. Spurs now have the second half of the international break to find a replacement for Tudor, who attended the funeral of his father, Mario, in his homeland of Croatia this week. The new boss will find it very difficult to avoid relegation as Tottenham has a really tough schedule until the end of the season. They will play Sunderland, Wolves, Aston Villa, Leeds, Chelsea and Everton.
