The forward has been on top of his game since joining the sugar millers in the mid-season transfer season

Mara Sugar FC attacker Alex Imbusia has opened up on the challenges he faced and how he overcame rejection to revive his football career at the Kilgoris-based club.

At the start of the 2025/26 Kenyan football season, Imbusia quietly joined National Super League side, Vihiga United FC, a move driven by his determination to resurrect a once-promising career that had hit turbulent waters.

The tribulations began during his time at Kakamega Homeboyz, where despite being tipped to thrive, the winger endured a career-threatening spell.

Limited playing time and mounting frustrations forced him to cut ties with the Kakamega-based outfit at the start of 2025.

Speaking exclusively to Mozzart Sport, the former Sofapaka FC attacker recounted his setbacks stating;

"While at Homeboyz, I knew I had the ability, but the chances just weren’t there. After leaving, I kept training on my own, and that’s why I decided to join Vihiga United. It’s the kind of situation where you play without regular team training, but I kept working on myself."

Despite joining a side with selective training schedules, Imbusia’s personal discipline allowed him to stay match-fit.

His perseverance paid off during the mid-season transfer window when he made a bold decision to join Mara Sugar FC, a team now eyeing a steady foothold in the top-tier league in just its second season since promotion at the end of 2023/24.

Reflecting on his four-month stint at Mara Sugar, Imbusia emphasized the effort it took to regain his place at the top level:

"Coming to Mara Sugar has taken a lot of effort and a strong desire to revive my career. I endured a lot to secure a spot in the league once again, and I can only be proud of the sacrifices," he stated.

Since his arrival, the right-footed winger has been instrumental in Mara Sugar’s campaign, scoring five goals, including a brace against his former club Sofapaka, and goals against Kakamega Homeboyz, Ulinzi Stars, and recently Nairobi United, where he salvaged a point for the team under coach Francis Xavier.

Imbusia has set himself a personal target of ten goals this season, a milestone he believes will not only mark a personal revival but also help Mara Sugar secure their first-ever top-half finish since promotion.

In their debut top-flight campaign, Mara Sugar finished 14th, narrowly avoiding relegation in the latter stages of that campaign.

"I am delighted with my current scoring streak. My focus for the remainder of the season is to reach the ten-goal mark. Achieving that would be fulfilling personally and would significantly help the club secure a respectable top-half finish," he added.

With eight matches remaining, Mara Sugar will be counting on Imbusia’s experience and goal-scoring prowess as they prepare to face Posta Rangers on Monday, 6 April at Awendo Green Stadium a clash where the winger will once again be expected to lead the charge.
