In a slow-paced match, lackluster England played out a draw with Uruguay

Not such a good performance from the England national team against the South American side, as it finished 1–1

Thomas Tuchel’s side were sorely mistaken if they thought they would have an easy task against Uruguay in this friendly at Wembley — it turned out to be quite the opposite. Truth be told, neither team showed much throughout the match, but two late goals ultimately decided it. Ben White struck first for England, only to later concede a penalty, which Federico Valverde converted to seal the final score.

The Three Lions started brightly and carved out their first opportunity as early as the 4th minute. James Garner delivered a teasing ball into the box, finding Harry Maguire, but the defender couldn’t guide his header on target. Just minutes later, England threatened again—Solanke burst into space with a sharp turn of pace and unleashed a shot from distance, which took a deflection and went behind.

England’s attacking approach was evident throughout the opening stages. They played with urgency, moving the ball forward quickly and pressing aggressively, with Garner particularly impressive in midfield. Noni Madueke caused problems down the flank, winning a series of corners, although one such moment saw Mathias Piquerez pick up a knock while making a crucial block.

As the half progressed, England continued to combine well in the final third. A slick passage of play between Rashford and Djed Spence in the 29th minute opened up Uruguay’s defense, with Garner once again involved—this time delivering a cross to the back post where Solanke rose highest, only to see his looping header comfortably gathered by Muslera.

Rashford remained a constant threat, producing a standout moment in the 39th minute with a powerful 40-yard run down the flank. Beating two challenges, he delivered a dangerous cross into the area, with Solanke just unable to connect cleanly.

Uruguay had their moments on the break, particularly through Agustin Canobbio. Deep into stoppage time, he found space once more and attempted a shot from distance, but failed to trouble James Trafford, sending his effort over the bar.

The hosts continued where they left off after the break, with Phil Foden heavily involved early. Just before the hour mark, he picked up the ball 22 yards out, showed quick feet to create space, but ultimately scuffed his effort, failing to test Muslera. Shortly after, changes were on the horizon as Cole Palmer prepared to enter the action.

England kept probing, and in the 60th minute, Spence drove into a dangerous central position before striking from distance. His effort took a deflection and looped kindly for Calvert-Lewin, but the striker couldn’t generate clean contact, allowing Muslera to gather comfortably.

Rashford then tried his luck three minutes later, cutting inside and shooting from range, though his attempt lacked conviction and was easily dealt with after a deflection.

The biggest chance of the match came in the 71st minute—and it was a glaring miss. Palmer, now on the pitch, delivered an excellent free-kick straight onto the head of Calvert-Lewin, who found himself just four yards from goal. With the net at his mercy, he somehow headed wide, a miss that left everyone stunned and seemed certain to be punished.

However, England’s persistence finally paid off in the 81st minute, albeit in scrappy fashion. From a corner, Calvert-Lewin flicked the ball on, and it awkwardly crept toward goal. Muslera got a hand to it but failed to stop it fully, and Ben White was perfectly positioned at the back post to bundle the ball over the line from point-blank range.

Deep into stoppage time, drama unfolded as Uruguay were awarded a penalty after a VAR review. The referee was called over to the monitor to reassess an incident involving Ben White, who made contact with the attacker—enough, in VAR’s view, to justify the decision.

Federico Valverde stepped up and made no mistake, calmly slotting the ball into the corner. The Uruguay players and their fans erupted in celebration, while the remaining home supporters inside Wembley were left stunned into silence.
