Ambani, who played as a striker for Ingwe when they last won the league in 1998, is looking to deliver the title as coach

AFC Leopards head coach Fred Ambani had disclosed the tactical changes that delivered a comeback victory over a stubborn APS Bomet.

Ingwe hosted the law enforcers to a league match on Saturday, 17 September at the Nyayo National Stadium where two goals in the 97th and 99th minutes by Christopher Koloti and Ronald Sichenje respectively canceled out an 84th minute strike by Phillip Wasai to grant Leopards a 2-1 win.

Speaking to the press after the match, a visibly elated Ambani revealed the tactical tweaks that orchestrated the late victory.

“We conceded late in the game and the idea was to try and salvage the game. I therefore had to take a risk. We brought in Koloti and asked him to stick upfront so that together with Omune (Victor), we could have two strikers.

We were now bypassing the midfield and opted for direct balls to the box because we had removed creativity and only retained Madada (Kelly) who still had the energy to play as a box to box midfielder,” said Ambani.

The tactical substitutions also saw the former Zoo FC tactician taking off James Kinyanjui and right back Brian Ojok for two wingers; Victor Otieno and Julius Masaba, the latter taking the right back role which then saw Leopards dominate the right side of attack.

“We also brought in Victor and Masaba who formed a good combination on the right side and generally all those substitutions worked.

The first goal for instance saw Omune drop deep in midfield, pick the ball, drive into the final third and set up Koloti,” added Ambani.

In the end, Leopards managed a third consecutive win and a fifth in six matches there by increasing their title hopes.

“It was a good fighting spirit and shows how champions approach gamed because we would not have won the game had we lost hope after conceding in the dying minutes," he continues.

Ambani who played as a striker for Ingwe when they last won the league in 1998 also took time to appreciate the club’s faithful.

“Leopards fans have faith in the team. Even when we went down, they chose to push the players instead of insulting them as was the case in the past and that's good for the team. I urge them to keep supporting us even as we continue to build a formidable team,” he remarked.
