Inside Mathare's tactics that ended KCB's unbeaten start in 2024-2025 FKFPL season

The Bankers were expected to wipe the floor with Mathare and maintain their unbeaten start in the season but Meshack Ochieno had other thoughts

Mathare United head coach John Kamau has disclosed the tactics the team deployed to end KCB's unbeaten run last weekend.

Meshack Ochieno struck the winning goal in the 55th minute to hand Mathare their third win of the season.

Coming into the match, KCB had gone for seven games without tasting defeat in the FKF Premier League and were strong favorites to win the match.

However, Mathare shocked them to climb to the top half of the log.

Kamau said realizing KCB's strengths and weaknesses enabled him to set up the team for the win.

We analyzed the game between KCB and Tusker, day in, day out, and realized that KCB were a threat in the wing play. That is what we did. I want to thank players for adjusting to a new system as we played with five at the back,” said Kamau.

Mathare had a slow start into the season but the team appears to be stabilizing following the back-to-back victories.

The technical bench was heavily criticised in the early days of the season, but Kamau believes it was unjustified to conclude that the team would have a poor season.

I have a lot of faith in the boys. We were being pressured, and I think for a team that has just risen from the NSL with new faces, it was unjust for people to draw conclusions. We have worked hard, and it has started to pay dividends,” he added.

Despite the good run of form, the former Posta Rangers tactician told people associated with the club to stay focused and humble.

Sponsors, fans, management, players, and the technical bench members need to be humble. A win takes people over the moon, but all I am asking from the setup is to be humble as we build the team,” he said.

Mathare United are now fourth in the log standings with eleven points.

They will be back in action on 23rd November against Kamau’s former employers, Posta Rangers.
