Inter avoid defeat after trailing by two goals in Bologna

The new Serie A champions managed to secure a 3-3 draw in the end

It is obvious that Bologna enjoy hosting Inter at the Renato Dall’Ara. The team from Emilia-Romagna clearly have the formula for dealing with the Nerazzurri, at least on home soil. True, today’s match carried no real competitive significance, which allowed us to watch an open and entertaining game, and Bologna came very close to taking all three points once again (3-3). The Rossoblu are now unbeaten in four of their last five home matches against Inter. It all started in the 2021/22 season when Bologna won 2-1. That was their first victory over the Milan giants in 20 years, and since then they have regularly troubled them. Inter’s only away win during that stretch came in March 2024 (1-0).

Despite all of that, it was clear from the start that this was one of those matches where there will be goals. Both teams played without calculations, and it quickly became obvious we were in for a high-scoring affair, which is exactly what happened. In a way, it was the perfect farewell match for the veterans on both sides. Tonight, Stefan de Vrij and Henrikh Mkhitaryan played their final matches in Inter shirts, while Francesco Acerbi, Matteo Darmian, and Yann Sommer remained on the bench. There is a 99 percent chance none of them will still be part of Inter next season.

The match was opened by a brilliant free-kick goal from Federico Dimarco. Inter’s left-back once again confirmed that this has been the best season of his career. He also reached a personal record for goals scored in a single Serie A campaign (six). However, despite going behind, Bologna looked like the more dangerous side and managed to turn the game around before halftime through goals from Federico Bernardeschi and Tommaso Pobega. When Piotr Zielinski then scored an own goal, it seemed the three points were within reach. In the end, though, Cristian Chivu’s substitutions managed to spark Inter back to life, at least enough to avoid defeat. A huge part of the credit goes to young Slovenian Luka Topalović. The youngster, who mostly features for Inter’s U23 side, played a key role in the equalizer scored by Andy Diouf, as it was Topalović who set up the Frenchman for the finish that made it 3-3. Before that, Pio Esposito had reduced the deficit.
